Brow Lift

The brow tend to descend with age although it is not unusual to see a young person with a sad or angry expression on their face due to the descent of the brow. The diagram below illustrates the typical changes that occur from a youthful looking brow to one in an aged face.

As can be seen from above, the dropping of the brow results in the typical appearance of a tired or angry face.
The goal of the brow lift operation are to reposition the brow through a combination of steps that include mobilization of the brow and modification of the muscles as well as reduction in the deep wrinkles of the forehead. It is often necessary to do surgery of the upper and lower eyelids to remove redundant skin and fat where necessary to create harmony between the upper and middle third of the face

The planning of the incisions will depend to a large extent on the position of the hairline. The most favourable circumstances are when the prospective patient has a low hairline with thick hair. This means that the scar can be better concealed. In instances where a patient has a receding hairline, it may be necessary to modify the placement of the incisions.

The scalp is freed up right down to the eyebrows and the base of the nose at the level of the bone.

The brow is elevated and a few key staples are places to gauge the amount of skin to be removed.

The direction of pull is indicated in the diagram.
The redundant scalp is trimmed of and the wound closed with staples.

Anaesthesia
The operation is performed under deep sedation and local anaesthesia or general anaesthetic.
The procedure is done on a day case basis you will go home on the same day. There is usually a minimal amount of pain following the procedure and you will wear a head bandage for a few days. The sutures and staples are usually removed from about day 7 onwards.
We generally endevour to overcorrect as there is a tendency for the brow to descend a few millimeters over the ensuing months.
