The MACS Lift

The MACS lift is a brilliant innovation by a pair of Belgian plastic surgeons and has the advantage of a shorter scar, reduced operating time and faster recovery time.

The fundamental difference between a traditional facelift and the MACS procedure is that the lifting of the facial tissue is in a vertical direction (right hand diagram) as opposed to a backward direction in a conventional facelift. In instances where there is simply too much loose skin in the face, a traditional facelift will have to be perfomed.

Much of the principles of a traditional facelift still apply (read our page on Facelift) however, the complication rate is considerably lower.

The MACS lift is excellent for people with:

*       Early jowl formation

*       Moderate loose skin below the chin

*       Moderate folds of skin running from the corner of the mouth to the nose.

The Simple MACS lift
The first diagram above demonstrates the position of the scars and the area of undermining of the cheek skin. This operation would be indicated in the younger patient where the cheek area is well preserved and there are no bags under the eyes.

The Extended MACS lift
This is used to lift the upper cheek area and remove excess skin around the eyelids shown in the second diagram above.

Deep anchor sutures
The third diagram above shows the other major difference with the MACS Lift: that permanent anchor sutures are used to elevate and hold the deeper tissues in the face. These anchor sutures are depicted by the dotted lines and the fixation points are the heavy dots just above the cheek bones. These sutures facilitate a much longer lasting result.

It is often necessary to perform other ancillary procedures at the same time such as liposuction of the neck and jawline to augment the final result.

Recovery time is much quicker than a conventional facelift - approximately two weeks. The scars are buried within the sideburn hairline and are created so that hair actually grows through the scars making them virtually invisible.

Here are a few examples of patients who have benefited from this procedure
